This three-year project increased knowledge of international learning assessment at six project sites; developed skills in implementing assessment and using assessment results at these project sites; and enhanced the knowledge and tools available to higher education for assessing international learning.

During the course of the project, the team translated a set of agreed-upon international learning outcomes into measurable performance indicators and rubrics; conducted a coordinated effort to assess student achievement of these international learning outcomes; developed plans to improve student international learning at their institutions based on these efforts; and disseminated lessons learned to the larger higher education community through workshops and a Web-based resource.

Within five months of its launch in early 2008, the Web site received 1,500 unique hits. Its content includes general information on preparing for assessment, a toolkit for implementing the ePortfolio/student survey approach, and an interactive forum for sharing new resources on international learning outcomes assessment methods. In addition, the American Council on Education (ACE) and project members facilitated approximately 15 workshops and presentations, reaching more than 500 people.

Evaluation examined the extent to which project faculty and staff increased their ability to assess international learning and used the evidence from systematic assessment to formulate a plan for improved student learning. Evaluation also addressed the extent to which the resources and assessment workshops developed by participants during the project enhanced the knowledge and skills base of members of the ACE Internationalization Collaborative, a network of more than 90 institutions active in internationalizing their campuses.
